Got some extra time and corks? But missing a bath mat? The solution to your problems is below!

Necessary Materials

For this project, you'll need 175 wine corks, plus a few extra for adjustments. The materials list also includes hot glue, a piece of fabric, a sharp pocket knife, a cutting board (don't worry if it gets a little damaged), scissors or a guillotine, a long ruler, and cork paper.

Preparing the Corks

Start by cutting each cork in half with your pocket knife. It’s a good idea to use corks that are similar in length and width to avoid having to constantly adjust the mat. Arrange the corks in a rectangular shape, with the flat corners facing down. Use a ruler or the lines on a guillotine cutter to ensure that the sizes are even. The resulting mat will measure approximately 18 x 30 inches (or 10 x 35 cork halves), which is slightly smaller than a standard bath mat.

Preparing the Fabric

Measure and cut a piece of fabric to serve as the base for your rug. Use an old piece of fabric, in keeping with the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, and recycle) principle. This will reduce the need to buy a new rug and give your fabric and corks a new lease of life. If your existing fabric is not waterproof, consider using a new waterproof plastic or fabric to ensure that your rug is moisture-resistant.

Assembly

Place the corks on the fabric, starting at the edges. Apply hot glue to each cork and press them firmly onto the fabric. Remove any excess glue before it dries to ensure a clean finish. Once the edges are complete, place the rest of the corks in their corresponding positions on the rug. You may need to adjust some of the corks so that they all fit together naturally.

Finishing and Care

Once you’ve lined up and glued all of your corks, your recycled rug is ready to use. Not only does this project provide a decorative and useful item for your bathroom, but it’s also a creative way to recycle corks and fabric. Maintaining the rug is simple; just wipe off any excess glue and make sure the base fabric is dry before using.
